Handy Hints1. Who is using the bathroom , one or more people, adults or kids ? At what time of day? Consider how the bathroom will be used - will it be for rushed early morning starts, in which case practicality will be an important design feature. Will it be as a retreat at the end of the day, in which case space and aesthetics will be paramount.
2. Consider underfloor heating with a digital timer. This will mean your bathroom is warm when you wish to use it – be it morning or night. It is a worthwhile investment in your comfort.
3. What look are you trying to achieve ? Generally speaking it should match the look and feel of the rest of the house. Select tiles, tapware and other accessories to complement the look. For example minimalistic bathrooms will need flick mixers as opposed separate taps.
4. There are many types of tiles available, do your research regarding tile properties in terms of durability, porous nature, cleaning tips and any up-keep required. Some types of stone tiles for example require regular sealing.
5. Always purchase some extra tiles to keep aside should any need to be replaced at a later date. Tiles are generally manufactured in batches and colours can vary from batch to batch.
6. Don’t underestimate the importance of waterproofing. Ensure the tradesman is a licensed waterproofer and that he issues you with a waterproofing certificate. Rectification works required due to water leaking are usually expensive.
7. Instead of flat mirrors hung on a wall, consider slim line shaving cabinets with mirrored fronts. These afford practical storage space and eliminate the need in some cases for any vanity storage at all.
8. Niches cut into walls make handy storage areas for towels or shampoo bottles and the like in the shower area.
9. Recessed lights underneath shaving cabinets afford a practical lighting solution.
10. Exhaust fans should not be placed directly above shower recesses. The outlet should be installed at the opposite end of the bathroom to the door. This will ensure the fan pulls fresh dry air through the doorway into the bathroom. The power of the exhaust fan you'll require will depend on the size of your bathroom.
